Chapter twenty-five

12:30 Heseb

Joliette wasn't a ninja. She kept peeking out before stepping into hallways, stalking around, and acting super sketchy. If someone were to see her, they would've been suspicious.

"Listen, Jolie, why don't you walk beside me and look like we're supposed to be here?"

She looked around guiltily. "Because we're not. If we get caught, they'll lock us up, especially if they figure out what we have planned."

"Yikes. Good to know. Here's the thing, though—when you're sneaking around like this, sometimes it's best to just act natural."

"I'll try. I'm used to being the one who's catching the sneaky person, not being the sneaky person."

We arrived at the deserted holding area where Roland and his goons had locked me up. The storm helped us in this case.

The cell with the steel container inside was in front of us. A thick padlock and a chain with links forged of several kinds of metal secured the inner door.

"What did this guy do again?"

"Which time?"

"Go over the highlights with me."

"Pharaoh's Guardians originally captured him when he summoned several demons to attack his enemies. Over the years, he's escaped twice, raised a peasant rebellion once, and recently, he killed one of his students."

"Sounds like a pleasant guy."

"You're the one who wants to meet him."

My throat was dry. "I'm running out of time, Joliette."

"I know. Why do you think I agreed to this crazy idea?"

"Because I'm awesome, and you'd hate to lose such a good friend?"

She gave out a humph, pulled out a key, and unlocked the cell door. "Right." She stepped inside cautiously.

"So even after all he did, they put him in charge of training students?"

She nodded. "He's the best, and honestly, he hadn't caused trouble for centuries—until his last incident."

That gave me some confidence. Maybe it was all some misunderstanding. This latest death could have been an accident. I could do this. I stepped up next to her.

"But listen, don't let your guard down around him. He's strong, and he might think killing you is providing a service."

"Fantastic." There went my new confidence.

She pulled a little crystal from her belt and waved it around, looking through it. "There are no wards I can detect. Some could fool me with their magical traps or alarms, but not many."

She used another key to unlock the giant padlock and worked on the combination of the solid door. "I'm one of the few with access… if someone like Oz or Roland cares to look, they'll know we've been here."

"If this is too dangerous, we should find another way."

"No. This is the way, along with taking the Eye back from Lombre."

The door lock clicked. She wiped her hand on her pants, and then turned the wheel. Somewhere deep inside the steel container, the sound of sliding stone reverberated.

I assumed, since the steel container was only approximately seven feet tall, with the same length, and about ten feet of width, that this Heseb guy would be right inside, but a layer of dank mist cleared, and I could see a set of pitted, chipped stairs leading up.
